FTSE Mixed amid Middle East Caution and Oil Pressure
FTSE Finish Line 24/9/2026 : FTSE Mixed amid Middle East Caution and Oil Pressure
U.K. stocks turned in another mixed performance on Thursday, as investors weighed ongoing Middle East security risks and firming oil prices against a distinct lack of meaningful progress in U.S.-Iran peace talks. The absence of major domestic economic releases or broader market-moving catalysts kept trading conditions cautious, leaving the benchmark consolidating near the flat line.
Consumer discretionary, grocery staples, and select energy stocks led the gains. JD Sports Fashion surged over 3% to top blue-chip risers, while Sainsbury gained 2.3%. Broad-based buying across personal care, retail, and defensives lifted Marks & Spencer, Ithaca Energy, Diploma, Haleon, Diageo, British American Tobacco, Tesco, Coca-Cola HBC, and Vodafone Group by 1.5% to 2.0%. Energy majors and utilities also offered steady support, with BP, Associated British Foods, Antofagasta, United Utilities, Centrica, Bunzl, National Grid, and Glencore advancing 1.0% to 1.4%. Outside the top flight, Raspberry Pi Holdings shares soared 11.5% after the single-board computer maker reported rising second-half shipment volumes and confirmed that its memory component inventories remained sufficient to meet full-year targets.
Conversely, financial services, wealth managers, and aerospace names faced persistent selling pressure. Standard Life, St. James's Place, Rentokil Initial, and Kingfisher led the downside, falling between 3.0% and 3.7%. Broader weakness hit Computacenter, AutoTrader Group, Investec, Pershing Square Holdings, Aberdeen Group, and ICG, which lost 1.5% to 2.7%. Specialty chemicals group Johnson Matthey fell about 1% despite announcing it would launch a share buyback program to repurchase up to £200 million of its common shares. Elsewhere, defense and technology heavyweights including Rolls-Royce Holdings, BAE Systems, Babcock International, Polar Capital Technology Trust, and 3i Group traded notably lower.
Finish Line: U.K. equities remained locked in range-bound trading as resilience in retail staples and energy majors offset pullbacks in wealth managers and defense heavyweights. While Raspberry Pi's inventory update delivered a bright spot for technology investors, broader market conviction remains constrained by sticky energy costs and geopolitical deadlock.
